The dodo, now extinct, once inhabited the small island of Mauritius, located near Madagascar. This large flightless bird was easy prey for mariners and colonists as a food source. Overhunting coupled with the introduction of domestic dogs, cats, and pigs lead to the dodo’s extinction in 1681.
