Skulls Unlimited International is the world's leading professional skull and skeleton cleaning service. We process thousands of specimens every year for hunters, wildlife professionals, universities, government agencies, natural history museums, and private collectors. Our methods have been refined over decades, and the results speak for themselves.
Properly cleaning a skull requires more than removing flesh — it requires removing every trace of tissue, fat, and membrane without damaging the bone, the teeth, or the delicate nasal and orbital structures. Done incorrectly, a skull can crack, bleach out, lose teeth, or develop a persistent odor. Done professionally, a skull becomes a permanent, beautiful, displayable specimen that will last for generations.
Our primary cleaning method uses a colony of Dermestes maculatus — the flesh-eating beetles that have been used by natural history museums for over a century. The beetles and their larvae consume soft tissue with extraordinary precision, leaving bone completely clean and intact. This method is ideal for:
For certain specimens, particularly larger mammals and those with heavy tissue, we use a controlled warm-water maceration process. This method dissolves soft tissue slowly and safely, and is especially effective for large skulls where beetle processing would be time-prohibitive.
Many specimens — particularly from bears, pigs, and other fatty mammals — require an extended degreasing process after cleaning. Without it, oils migrate through the bone over time, causing yellowing and odor. Our degreasing process produces bones that are clean, dry, and stable for long-term display or storage.
We offer professional whitening using hydrogen peroxide — never bleach, which destroys bone integrity. Whitening is optional and performed only on request. Many collectors prefer the natural bone color, which we consider equally beautiful.
We process skulls and skeletons from nearly any species, including:
