The desert cottontail is part of the Leporidae family, but unlike the European rabbit, they do not build social burrows. They live in burrows that were made by other mammals, give birth in their burrows and very rarely leave. The desert cottontail has large ears to help hear approaching predators. The main diet of the desert cottontail is forbs, grass, twigs, fruit, shrubs, and sometimes cacti.
